Warm Vicinity (2023)
Warm Vicinity is a project that depicts a range of intimate connections. I utilize formal photographic elements such as line, light, and color to create a dynamic interplay between portraits and still-life representations of intimate and mundane subject matter. Distortions of domestic objects and everyday vignettes are presented for their ability to function as visual representations of time, holding unique imprints of human interaction and familiarity.
The photographs are 35mm, and solely utilize the available light. Warm Vicinity presents moments of intimacy seen in passing, but moreover explores what connection means to me. It reveals vicinities within individual images, from image to image, and between the viewer and the photographs.
Vicinity means the area near or surrounding a particular place. These photographs were made in many different cities and climates, allowing for an conceptual oxymoron when considering this overarching vicinity.
I’m interested in the notion that this “particular place” is the warmth associated with interpersonal connections to the spaces we occupy and with one another.
Four digital chromogenic prints along with the book were presented in a group show at the Sheila Johnson Design Center at Parsons School of Design from May 15th to May 30th of 2023.
Yuk Hei Ho, close friend and meticulous graphic designer, designed the cover with me, as well as edited the typefaces found in the book.
